Peacemakers

grace, peace

The daily news depresses me. With the news comes that horrible feeling of helplessness. I’ve tried tuning it out, but it doesn’t work. So what can we do? Build on the peace that our Lord gives to us.

“Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give it to you. Do not let your hearts be troubled or afraid,” said Jesus to his disciples [John 14:27].

Does trouble or fear keep us from building on our Lord’s peace and being peacemakers? Honestly, for myself I have to say yes, especially with increasing attacks on the Church. Frankly, I am not one to venture outside my comfort zone. However, I know staying on the sidelines doesn’t help.

Making Peace

While deep down I feel an internal peace, I don’t always trust it. That’s when trepidation gets in the way and that’s when I call on Mary, our Blessed Mother, for help. In Mary, the Queen of Peace, we see full faith, hope, and trust in the Holy Trinity.

Like Mary, by the power of the Holy Spirit, we can bear much fruit. Through “love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control” [CCC 736] we can overcome the anxiety in our lives. And living by the Spirit, we share in Christ’s grace. Christ is our peace.

Jesus reconciled the human race with God by the blood of his cross [CCC 2305]. We can carry on his mission by following Jesus’ teachings and the promptings of the Holy Spirit. As peacemakers, we can help others find peace by showing with our lives that God loves us.

“Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God,” said Jesus in his Sermon on the Mount [Matthew 5:9]. Our Lord gives his grace and the Beatitudes to help us live our faith and uphold God’s commandments. “You shall love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the greatest and the first commandment. The second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself” [Matthew 22:37–39].

Stepping Forward

Doing what our Lord says requires perseverance in faith and charity. To withhold love from God and humanity is to hold back the effort to make peace. To reject God’s love is to reject his peace. Many in our world have rejected God as belief in our Almighty Father continues to decline.

Therefore, if we do not step forward as peacemakers, evil will most assuredly step in. Evil already has corrupted many hearts and minds. Every day we see the willful destruction of the sanctity and dignity of human life. Let us not give evil the upper hand.

Graces we receive from our Lord, we are meant to share. Through the Blessed Virgin Mary, Christ came into the world to teach us the way. Therefore, let us use our God-given talent to work with our churches for the sake of peace. Together, let us pray to change hearts and minds to protect the sanctity and dignity of human life. Together, let us reach out to lost souls in our communities to help them find peace of mind and heart.

May God’s peace and saving grace be with us and our world always. Amen!

“Graces we receive from our Lord, we are meant to share.” This reminds me of the “Parable of Talents.”
    God Bless,
