“If I have all faith so as to move mountains but do not have love, I am nothing” [1 Corinthians 13:2]. St. Paul says it all—with love—with charity comes clarity. Love at the center of our intentions enlivens our faith, guiding us to act in ways that truly reflect the spirit of God.
As we hold fast to charity (love of God and neighbor), we step into a deeper understanding and fulfillment of God’s will, enabling us to bring hope and light to those around us. Our purpose becomes so clear. As St. Thérèse of Lisieux exclaimed: “My vocation is love!”
Heartbreaking, too many cannot see this vocation, choosing hatred as their driving force—often fueled by loneliness and despair. Lifesaving, God’s love guides us out of darkness, sharpening our vision and opening our hearts toward the needs of those around us. Truly, with the clarity of charity, neighborliness replaces loneliness, hope overcomes despair.
The Heart of Clarity
Contemplating the Scriptures helps us to see connection between a genuine love for God and neighbor and the clarity of knowing God’s will. This connection aligns our motives and desires within our hearts with the very character of God. “God is love” [1 John 4:8].
God’s love has been revealed to us in His Word made flesh—Jesus Christ our Savior. “God sent his only Son into the world so that we might have life through him” [1 John 4:9]. Christ shows us the way: “love one another as I love you” [John 15:12].
“Whoever has my commandments and observes them is the one who loves me. And whoever loves me will be loved by my Father, and I will love him and reveal myself to him” [John 14:21]. By loving and serving others, we respond to Christ’s love for us.
Therefore, as we internalize Our Lord’s love, our love for Him and for others deepens and matures. Our lives become a testimony to God’s love. We become instruments of His peace, mercy, and compassion. Embracing charity, our view in the world changes, enabling us to recognize Christ in those we meet and serve.
Love Requires Strength
Following the promptings of divine love gives us a moral compass as we participate in Our Lord’s redemptive work in the world. Remember: “Love never fails” [1 Corinthians 13:8]. Doing everything through love requires strength which is gained in prayer.
Let us ask ourselves: How much time do I dedicate to daily prayer? Do I know how to draw on Our Lord’s love in my daily life? What am I holding back from God?
As we open our hearts more fully in prayer, we discover that God’s love is not just a consolation but a source of courage and clarity. God’s love empowers us to face the trials and uncertainties of life with faith and hope that we are meant to share. Therefore, let us resolve to seek God’s guidance each day, drawing upon His strength so that charity may shape our every thought, word, and deed, forever guiding us—and those we encounter—ever closer to Him.
May the good Lord make us increase and abound in love for one another and for all, so as to strengthen our hearts [1 Thessalonians 3:12–13]. May the Lord help us to follow Him and to give back love for love. Amen.
