Why Ukraine Matters: The Consecration of Russia to Mary

Catholic Church

In October 1917, seventy thousand people in a small town in Portugal called Fatima saw the sun “dancing” and other inexplicable phenomena. The event, which was seen by the press, photographed, etc, was, according to three children who claimed to be able to see a beautiful lady from heaven, a way for her to prove her words were true. And those words were basically that if the world did not repent, a war worse than WW 1 would appear.

No one did anything and WW II came up, killing eighty million people.

On April 26, 1987, exactly one year after the Chernobyl nuclear reactor disaster, a bright light covered the Church of the Holy Trinity (“Tserkva Presvyatoyi Triytsi Uhkts”) located in a small town in Ukraine called Hrushiv. As before, thousands of people came to see it (this time it was even televised), despite being under an atheist communist regime that could send to some gulag anyone claiming that God exists.

For a period of four months, this lady said,

I have come on purpose to thank the Ukrainian people because you have suffered most for the church of Christ in the last seventy years.  I have come to comfort you and to tell you that your suffering will soon come to an end.  Ukraine will become an independent state. Teach the children to pray.  Teach them to live in truth and live yourselves in truth.  Say the Rosary.  It is the weapon against Satan.  He fears the Rosary.  Recite the Rosary at any gathering of people. You in the Ukraine were the first nation to be entrusted to me. Throughout your long persecution you have not lost faith, hope, or love. If there is not a return of Christianity to Russia, there will be a third world war, and the whole world faces ruin.

Ukraine is indeed a pivotal country when it comes to Christianity. It was none other than Andrew, Jesus’s first disciple and the brother of Saint Peter, that brought Christianity there. According to tradition, he went up the Dnepr River to Kyiv: Ukraine’s capital. There, according to the chronicle “The Tale of Bygone Years”, he erected a cross in a place where today stands the Church of Saint Andrew. He then said, “On these hills will shine forth the grace of God, and a great city will be created here, and the Lord will raise up many churches in it.” And it became true: Kyiv would become the capital of the “Kievan Rus”, a confederation of peoples which would eventually become the Russia we know today. As for the words of that lady about Ukraine being the first country consecrated to her, Ukraine’s ruler Yaroslav the Wise dedicated Ukraine to her in 1037.

Nowhere else did I see such devotion as in Ukraine: anyone would think that the picture I took of people praying outside of the cathedral of Lviv in Ukraine was because of the war, but this picture was taken by me during my first visit to that country in 2018. And that is normal over there: the churches being so full people just listen to mass outside, standing up respectfully. And, that, after 80 years of KGB rule: one person I spoke with told me her uncle was sent to Siberia for just helping at mass.

In fact, it is impossible to think of Ukraine and Russia without thinking about that lady: before the revolutions of 1917 that overthrew the Russian Empire and led to the creation of the Soviet Union, Russia was colloquially known as the “House of Mary” because there were more churches dedicated to her than in any other country at the time. And that faith comes from the times of the barbaric Timur, who caused the deaths of about 5% of the world’s population at the time.

When he threatened to invade Moscow, people prayed to that lady and he had a dream of a radiant Virgin with saints in shining garments and holding swords and angels ordering him to leave Russia. He told his advisors of his dream, asking for the meaning. The dream interpreters explained that he saw the protectress of Russia and there was no victory possible then. Timur ordered a retreat then, and one can only imagine what his soldiers thought when they learned they were going home because of a woman. It is no wonder that the Latin-rite Catholic bishops in Ukraine asked last week Pope Francis to publicly consecrate Ukraine and Russia to the Immaculate Heart of Mary as that lady had requested in Fatima all the way back to 1917.

Today we see people all over the world doing well-intentioned actions to try to help the Ukrainians such as renting rooms in Airbnb and not checking in to allow them to be used by refugees, Polish restaurants changing the name of “Russian” dumplings to “Ukrainian”, crowdfunding campaigns, etc. As great and honorable as they are, they can only remind us of the scene of the comedy movie “Wag the dog”, where students throw their shoes as a protest for a war which was not even real.

What the world needs is conversion, not Airbnb rooms and dumpling renaming. We’ve let a philosophy (communism) grow despite having killed 100 million people and even imported many of its supposedly “charitable” deeds such as the elimination of the unborn, a “woke” culture which looks good on the outside but actually is, a “cancel” culture which does not forgive despite any attempt for the person to prove he is sorry and has changed.

Alternatively, and if we are to believe what happened in 1917, chances are that we will indeed have a WW III. Funny will then have to hear “Where was God?”

Russia is the largest country in the world and was the first to be consecrated to the Virgin Mary in 1037. However, Communism was able to erase that, spreading atheism and error on a global scale.

Thus, in 1917, the Virgin Mary asked for Russia to be consecrated to her Immaculate Heart. She said “Russia will spread its errors throughout the world, raising up wars and persecutions of Church”
and warned that if that wasn’t done otherwise another World War would come up.

In 1987, the Virgin Mary appeared again in a small town in Ukraine called Hrushiv and said ” Recite the Rosary at any gathering of people.

You in the Ukraine were the first nation to be entrusted to me. If there
is not a return of Christianity to Russia, there will be a third world
war, and the whole world faces ruin.

The recent events in Ukraine seem to show that those words may become true.

As such, let us join forces on this day of the Feast of her loving husband, Saint Joseph, on March 19th for a Consecration of Russia to her Divine Heart.

It will be online on Facebook on March 19th, 2022 at 6 PM GMT time.

Feel free to spread it around!

  1. Kathleen:
I have a copy of the CCC. Read 675. I think that this statement from the Church is based on scriptures; see footnote 575 in the CCC.

  3. Robert: The Apostles didn’t say anything about the Holy Trinity either. You tell us that you are reading the Bible. Do you remember what Jesus said when He ordained St. Peter as our first Pope – “Upon this Rock I will build my Church… and the gates of Hell shall not prevail against Her… whoever hears you hears Me. I pray that you will home to the Church and not fight against her. Vatican II proclaimed Mary as Mother of the Church. Our Lady is the best of mothers; she loves you and all her children. Don’t be afraid to love her. Don’t you think Jesus loved his Mother very much. Again, reflect on the miracle at Cana. Mary told the stewards at the wedding feast ” do whatever He tells you.”.

  4. Al:
No, I’m a Catholic, who questions what the Church teaches vs. what the Bible says.
Read what is going on within the Vatican, the sexual abuse cases, homosexuality among the priests, things done and said by Pope Francis, etc. Then take a look at the warnings in Revelation 17 through 19.

    1. Robert:

You probably don’t believe in the Catechism of the Catholic Church either. If you happen to have the Catechism read paragraph 675.

Robert here we go again. Scripture quite clearly says Mary will “crush the serpent’s head.” Those two words are exact. God Bless You.

Robert here we go again. Scripture quite clearly says Mary will crush the serpent’s head. Those two words are exact. Instead of my use of the word destroy it states “crush.” God Bless You.

    1. Sorry, but scripture does not say that Mary will crush the serpent’s head. And the Book of Revelation gives us the prophecy about the demise of Satan.

  7. Robert:

You say you are a Catholic. I am wondering if you accept the doctrines regarding the Blessed Virgin Mary – Her Immaculate Conception (1854) and her Assumption into Heaven (1950).
I would ask you to pray a Hail Mary and ask Our Lady to intercede for you that the Holy Spirit will enlighten you with regard to all that the Church teaches with regard to Our Lady.

    1. Yes, I am a Catholic, however, I have been reading more of the Bible on a regular basis. The more that I read makes me question some of the Catholic dogma, such as the Immaculate Conception (1854) and the Assumption (1950).
The writers of the New Testament were all eyewitnesses of early Christianity, yet none of them mentioned these events. Isn’t that strange?

    1. From my Catholic Bible:
      Genesis 3:15
      New American Bible (Revised Edition)
15 I will put enmity between you and the woman,
      and between your offspring and hers;
They will strike at your head,
while you strike at their heel.[a]

      Footnotes

3:15 They will strike…at their heel: the antecedent for “they” and “their” is the collective noun “offspring,” i.e., all the descendants of the woman. Christian tradition has seen in this passage, however, more than unending hostility between snakes and human beings. The snake was identified with the devil (Wis 2:24; Jn 8:44; Rev 12:9; 20:2), whose eventual defeat seemed implied in the verse. Because “the Son of God was revealed to destroy the works of the devil” (1 Jn 3:8), the passage was understood as the first promise of a redeemer for fallen humankind, the protoevangelium. Irenaeus of Lyons (ca. A.D. 130–200), in his Against Heresies 5.21.1, followed by several other Fathers of the Church, interpreted the verse as referring to Christ, and cited Gal 3:19 and 4:4 to support the reference.

The Book of Revelation does not mention Mary at all in the defeat of Satan.

  8. Kathleen:
I’m a Catholic, pondering your statements vs. the Bible.
Where does God ordain that Mary will intercede for us?

    1. And where does the Bible say you can use the internet? This “Bible-does-not-mention-therefore-it-does-not-exist” is silly

No one “ordains” anyone to use Mary to intercede for us. If that makes you happy just don’t.

  9. Francisco Ruffolo

Robert Why Mary, because she asked for this to be done with the Holy Father and all the Catholic Bishops of the entire world at Fatima, Portugal in 1917. When Mother Mary who is the Mother of the Son of God and Mother of God asks for something to be done, just do it. Robert in scripture it quite clearly states that she is the one who is going to crush the serpent’s head and destroy him. That’s why! Mother Mary is the IMMACULATE CONCEPTION! That too is why.

The Pope, and his worldwide bishops, doing it on March 25th.
My question for all Catholics; why consecrate to Mary, when JESUS is our Lord and Savior? He will be returning to defeat the enemies of Israel at the Battle of Armageddon and establish God’s kingdom on earth in the near future. Read about it in the Bible – start with the Book of Revelation.

    1. Because Mary, the mother of Jesus, is the Queen Mother who will intercede for us. God has ordained it so. Read about Queen Esther in the O.T. On the Cross Jesus told John to “behold your mother”. Jesus, our King, wants his mother respected and He will listen to her when she intercedes for us. That is our hope. Also, remember the miracle at Cana. We need a big miracle now. I do hope our Protestant brothers and sisters will ponder Scripture where it speaks about Mary – the Blessed Virgin – Our Lady.

There’s a lot of really bad history here (starting with “we have allowed Communism to grow” despite its evils – “we” haven’t done any of that. Perhaps the wars in Korea, Vietnam and elsewhere have been forgotten. And to refer to the rise of the Soviet Union without assessing the causative role of the depravity of Tsarism, anti-Semitism, serfdom and the corruption of Orthodox Christianity, against which the Russian version of “Marxism” was a reaction), but if we can all agree that the struggle in Ukraine represents a battle between autocracy and democracy in the future of the world, because a government serving its people represents the best expression of the dignity of the human person in our imperfect world, then Ukrainian freedom is devoutly to be prayed for.
I highly doubt that a single dramatic act – consecration of Russia by the Holy Father – will lead to the suspension of all divine and human laws (particularly human free will) and cause the “conversion of the world,” but if does, wonderful.

    1. We DID allow communism to grow. If someone says he is a Nazi he can end up in jail, but if he says he is a communist nothing happens and he is even seen as a “scholar”

And mentioning Korea and Vietnam when Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Yugoslavia, Poland, Afghanistan, Albania, Bulgaria, Romania, Czechoslovakia, East Germany, Hungary, China, Tibet, Guinea, Cuba, Yemen, Kenya, Sudan, Congo, Burma, Angola, Benin, Cape Verde, Laos, Kampuchea were invaded by communism is surreal

And as for the ” Tsarism, anti-Semitism, serfdom” of the Czar period, he did not kill 100 million people as communism did.

    2. Have faith! Faith is rewarded. Read St. Paul’s Letter to the Hebrews 11:1-6. … From St. Paul:
Faith is confident assurance what we hope for, and conviction about things we do not see. Because of faith the men of old were approved by God.
God wants to help us if we will but listen. We can’t help ourselves now. Pray, pray as Our Lady has been asking for so many years now. May all the Angels and Saints intercede for us in this time of great peril. With Our Lady, Queen of the world, interceding for us. Pray the Rosary every day. God Bless.

  12. Francisco Ruffolo

Our Lady of Fatima and Our Lady of the Holy Rosary pray for Ukraine and the people of Ukraine that the Consecration of Russia to the Immaculate Heart of Mary with the Pope and all the bishops of the entire world be fulfilled. PRAY! PRAY! PRAY!
