We Are God’s Coworkers

While reading St. Paul’s letter to the Corinthians, four words touched my heart: “We are God’s co-workers” [1 Corinthians 3:9]. They are beautiful words—but what do they mean for us?

St. Paul wrote these words to the church of Corinth, referring to God’s ministers as planters and builders. His words also speak to all who earnestly follow Jesus Christ, our Savior—we become our Lord’s co-workers. We live this calling by loving God and one another and by letting His love be seen in our words and actions each day.

God’s Ministers

To minister means to serve. May we use our God-given freedom as an opportunity to “serve one another through love” [Galatians 5:13]. Our service does not have to be grand. A kind word or thoughtful gesture can share faith, hope, and, above all, love.

When we pray for someone and place their needs in God’s loving hands, we share faith. When we encourage a weary heart, hope can rise again. And whenever we listen, forgive, share, or offer simple kindness, God’s love becomes visible through us.

What we plant with faith, hope, and love or build upon the foundation of these virtues, God provides the grace to do so. Are we open to what Our Lord wants us to do? Are we willing to have our words and actions become ways to reveal our Lord’s loving presence to others?

Listen for God’s Guidance

To serve as God’s co-workers, we must learn to listen for His guidance. God often speaks not through dramatic signs, but through prayer, Scripture, conscience, and the needs around us. When we pause to listen and allow our Lord to penetrate our being, His wisdom and grace shape our thoughts, soften our hearts, and guide our choices.

Listening for God’s guidance requires patience and trust. We may not see the full path ahead, but we can take the next faithful step. A kind word, a choice to forgive, a willingness to help, or a moment of prayer can become the very place where Our Lord draws us closer to Himself and deeper into His work.

As we listen and respond, daily life becomes an opportunity to cooperate with grace. We begin to see where love is needed, where hope can be offered, and where faith can be strengthened. God’s guidance not only directs us; it transforms us, making us more attentive, compassionate, and ready to serve.

How Do We Begin?

We might begin the day by asking God to show us where we are needed. Later, we may notice someone carrying a burden, feel prompted to call a friend, or see a quiet chance to help without being asked. Let us conduct ourselves “in a way worthy of the gospel of Christ” [Philippians 1:27]. We are not simply doing a good deed; we are following God’s guidance and allowing Him to work through us.

As God graciously invites us to share in His work of love, St. Paul reminds us it is “only God, who causes the growth” [1 Corinthians 3:7]. Truly, when we listen, trust, and serve, this calling becomes more than a beautiful thought. It becomes how we live daily as God’s co-workers.

Dear Lord, help us hear Your voice in the quiet moments of each day. Teach us to faithfully trust Your guidance, serve with humble and hope-filled hearts, and share Your love wherever You lead us. Amen.
