Saints’ Quotes Praising Mary, The Mother of God

Saints praising Mary

As Catholics, we have 2000 years of saints’ quotes praising the Mother of God.  While their quotes do not carry the same weight as sacred scripture, they do tell us what holy men and women on earth, who are now in heaven, thought about the Blessed Virgin Mary.  The takeaway from reading these quotes is that we should all imitate them in this endeavor.  After all, Jesus was subject to His mother for thirty years before starting His public ministry. If we are to imitate Christ in our own lives, then asking Mary to be our own mother as well is a great way to start. If Marian devotion was the lens that the saints used to focus on Jesus in their lives, then why don’t we as well? We live in very dark times, but turning to Mary will lead us into the  light of her son, Jesus.

Mary in Scripture

Genesis 3:15 says that there will enmity between THE WOMAN and Satan. Luke 1:46 says that Mary’s soul magnifies the Lord, which then makes Jesus larger, clearer, and more focused in our lives. For sure, Mary’s soul is still very much alive, as are all souls in heaven. John 19:27 Jesus says to his disciple (we are ALL disciples of Christ),  “Behold YOUR mother.”  Revelation 12:17 says that we are her children if we obey the commandments and bear testimony that Jesus is the messiah.

Quotes From the Saints

St. Augustine

“Him whom the heavens cannot contain, the womb of one woman bore. She ruled our Ruler; she carried Him in whom we are; she gave milk to our Bread.”

St. Louis Marie de Montfort

“Satan, being proud, suffers infinitely more from being beaten and punished by a little and humble handmaid of God, and her humility humbles him more than the Divine power; and, secondly, because God has given Mary such a great power against the devils, that, as they have often been obliged to confess, in spite of themselves, by the mouths of the possessed, they fear one of her sighs for a soul more than the prayers of all the Saints, and one of her menaces against them more than all other torments.”

“God has never made or formed but one enmity; but it is an irreconcilable one, which shall endure and develop even to the end. It is between Mary, His worthy Mother, and the devil,—between the children and the servants of the Blessed Virgin and the children and instruments of Lucifer. The most terrible of all the enemies which God has set up against the devil is His holy Mother, Mary. He has inspired her, even since the days of the earthly Paradise, though she existed then only in His idea, with so much hatred against that cursed enemy of God, with so much industry in unveiling the malice of that old serpent, with so much power to conquer, to overthrow, and to crush that proud impious rebel, that he fears her not only more than all Angels and men, but in some sense more than God Himself. It is not that the anger, the hatred, and the power of God are not infinitely greater than those of the Blessed Virgin, for the perfections of Mary are limited, but it is, first, because Satan, being proud, suffers infinitely more from being beaten and punished by a little and humble handmaid of God, and her humility humbles him more than the Divine power; and, secondly, because God has given Mary such a great power against the devils, that, as they have often been obliged to confess, in spite of themselves, by the mouths of the possessed, they fear one of her sighs for a soul more than the prayers of all the Saints, and one of her menaces against them more than all other torments.”

“God the Father gathered all the waters together and called them the seas or maria [Latin, seas]. He gathered all His grace together and called it Mary or Maria . . . This immense treasury is none other than Mary whom the saints call the ‘treasury of the Lord.’ From her fullness all men are made rich.”

St. Bernardine of Siena

“You must know that when you ‘hail’ Mary, she immediately greets you! Don’t think that she is one of those rude women of whom there are so many-on the contrary, she is utterly courteous and pleasant. If you greet her, she will answer you right away and converse with you!“

“If God did not destroy man after his first sin, it was on account of his singular love for this holy Virgin, who was destined to be born of this race.  I have no doubt but that all the mercies granted by God under the old dispensation were granted only in consideration of this most Blessed Lady”

St. Bernard of Clairveaux

“O Blessed Mary, whoever loves you honors God; whoever serves you pleases God; whoever invokes your holy name with a pure heart will infallibly receive the object of his petition.”

“Go to this Mother of Mercy, and show her the wounds which thy sins have left on thy soul; then will she certainly entreat her Son, by the breast that gave him suck, to pardon thee all. And this divine Son, who loves her so tenderly, will most certainly grant her petition”

“Mary is that happy ark, in which those who take refuge will never suffer the shipwreck of eternal perdition”

“Remember that it has never been heard of in any age, that any sinner who turned to you was rejected by you. I am a miserable sinner, but I turn to you and trust in you.”

“As breathing is not only a sign but even a cause of life, so the name of Mary, which is constantly found on the lips of God’s servants, both proves that they are truly alive, and at the same time causes and preserves their life, and gives them every succor.”

St. Maximillian Kolbe

“Never be afraid of loving the Blessed Virgin too much. You can never love her more than Jesus did.”

“The conflict with Hell cannot be maintained by men, even the most clever. The Immaculata alone has from God the promise of victory over Satan. She seeks souls that will consecrate themselves entirely to her, that will become in her hands forceful instruments for the defeat of Satan and the spread of God’s kingdom.”

Jesus honored her before all ages, and will honor her for all ages. No one comes to Him, nor even near Him, no one is saved or sanctified, if he too will not honor her. This is the lot of Angels and of men.”

St. Thomas Aquinas

“Mary means Star of the sea, for as mariners are guided to port by the ocean star, so Christians attain to glory through Mary’s maternal intercession.”

Blessed Bartolo Longo

“My only desire is to see Mary, who has saved me and who will save me from the clutches of Satan.”

St. Hilary of Poitiers

“No matter how sinful one may have been, if he has devotion to Mary, it is impossible that he be lost.”

St. John Vianney

“Only after the last judgment will Mary get any rest; from now until then, she is much too busy with her children.”

St. Bonaventure

“O truly immense and admirable goodness of our God, which has been pleased to grant thee, O sovereign Mother, to us miserable sinners for our advocate, in order that thou, by thy powerful intercession, mayest obtain all that thou pleasest for us. O wonderful mercy of our God, who in order that we might not fly on account of the sentence that might be pronounced against us, has given us his own Mother and the patroness of graces to be our advocate”

“As the moon, which stands between the sun and the earth, transmits to this latter whatever it receives from the former, so does Mary pour out upon us who are in this world the heavenly graces that she receives from the divine sun of justice”

St. Augustine

“Mary, having merited to give flesh to the divine Word, and thus supply the price of our redemption, that we might be delivered from eternal death; therefore she is more powerful than all others to help us to gain eternal life”

St. John Chrysostom

“Hail, Mother of God and of us all, ‘heaven,’ where God dwells, ‘throne,’ from which our Lord dispenses all grace, ‘fair daughter, Virgin, honor, glory and firmament of our Church,’ assiduously pray to Jesus that in the day of judgment we may find mercy through thee, and receive the reward prepared by God for those who love him”

St. Padre Pio

“May the Most Holy Virgin, who was the first to practice the gospel perfectly and in all its severity, even before it was proclaimed, spur us on to follow closely in her footsteps.”

“Love our Lady and make her loved; always recite the Rosary and recite it as often as possible.”

“Love the Madonna and pray the Rosary, for her Rosary is the weapon against the evils of the world today. All graces given by God pass through the Blessed Mother.”

“How many time I have entrusted to this Mother (the Virgin Mary) the painful anxieties of my heart. And how many times she has consoled me. With what great attention she accompanied me to the altar this morning. It seemed to me that she had nothing else to think about but me, filling my heart with holy sentiments. I felt a mysterious fire in my heart, which I could not understand. I felt the need to put ice on in in order to extinguish the fire that was consuming me.”

St. Anthony Mary Claret

“A son of the Immaculate Heart of Mary…is a man who unceasingly expends himself to light the fire of divine love in the world. Nothing stops him.”

St. John Paul II

“From Mary we learn to surrender to God’s Will in all things. From Mary we learn to trust even when all hope seems gone. From Mary we learn to love Christ her Son and the Son of God!”

“Through Mary, we come to her Son more easily.”

St. Alphonsus Liguori

“Mary has been called an ark more spacious than that of Noah. For only two animals of every kind were brought into the ark of Noah. But under the mantle of Mary, the righteous and sinners all find their place.”

St. John of Damascus

“Behold, all generations will call you blessed, just as you have said. You are the royal throne that angels surround, seeing upon it their true King and Lord. You are a spiritual Eden, holier and more divine than the Eden of old. For that Eden was the dwelling of the mortal Adam, while the Lord himself came from heaven to dwell in you. Noah’s ark foreshadowed you, for you held the seed of the new world. You brought forth Christ, the salvation of the world, who destroyed sin and its angry waves. Just as Jacob saw the ladder bringing together heaven and earth, so you are placed between us, and have become the ladder of God’s communion with us, of him who took upon himself our weakness, uniting us to himself, and enabling us to see God.”

Our Lady of Guadalupe to St. Juan Diego

“Am I not here, I, who am your Mother? Are you not under my shadow and protection? Am I not the source of your joy? Are you not in the hollow of my mantle, in the crossing of my arms? Do you need anything more? Let nothing else worry you or disturb you.

  1. Robert the bible donot contradict the church teaching in 2timothy 4:3 dont u see that paul foresee the future by GOD grace, tell me when did protestant formed their doctrines are these in accordance with the bible. Ok it simple u think because the bible didn’t record our lady assumption then its not true?(but u know its in the bible)wait when was the first world war, if u are just a teenager born in the year 2004 certainly u will not have witness the war?right but u know its happened because those who witnessed it said so… So if the early church right from after christ ressurection believed that the blessed virgin mary is a virgin before and after giving birth to JESUS and also died a virgin, if the early church believed that she assumped into heaven body and soul… Tell me if u were among the earlu christians and u have not witness it u will have some doubt in u, right? But have u forgotten how many place in the bible talks about following church doctrine… Or will u tell me its the protestant doctrine that they are refering to… No … It was no other than the catholic doctrine
remember that JESUS told st peter that the gates of hell will never prevail over his church matthew 16:18 now think why did the catholic church survive all through the period it was persecuted? … its because JESUS promised that nothing will prevail his church. The onething that blinds our eyes is pride if we are truly humble we will know we are nothing and when the doctrines of the catholic church begins to make us feel confused we will ask others humbly for help , and not only that it is pride that make protestant think that they dont need mary for help, tell,me the truth if u are a beggar want to ask the president of your country for help and u know his servant wont u beg the servant of the president to help u beg the president … Why because u know u are miserable but when you are a president of a country and you want to visit the president of another country will u say you have any need of the servant? No … Because u,know that u are more higher than the servant
to help u pray to GOD to make u humble for if u remain proud u will never understand the scriptures but u will interpet them base on your own pride to suit what you want to believe

    1. Historically, Hyppolitus of Thebes claims that Mary lived for eleven years after the death of her Son Jesus and died in 41 CE. If that is true, her death would probably precede all of the books of the New Testament, yet not one of them it.
Regarding the Immaculate Conception, we are again faced with what is recorded in the Bible.
      Luke 1:46-55
      New American Bible (Revised Edition)
The Canticle of Mary. 46 And Mary said:
      “My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord;
47 my spirit rejoices in God my savior.
      48 For he has looked upon his handmaid’s lowliness;
behold, from now on will all ages call me blessed.
49 The Mighty One has done great things for me,
      and holy is his name.
50 His mercy is from age to age
      to those who fear him.
51 He has shown might with his arm,
dispersed the arrogant of mind and heart.
52 He has thrown down the rulers from their thrones
      but lifted up the lowly.
      53 The hungry he has filled with good things;
the rich he has sent away empty.
54 He has helped Israel his servant,
      remembering his mercy,
55 according to his promise to our fathers,
to Abraham and to his descendants forever.”

Mary declares that she needs a savior, doesn’t she? If she were born without sin and did not sin in her lifetime, why would she need a savior?

Gabriel didn’t announce that she was born without original sin.
      Luke 1:30-37
      New American Bible (Revised Edition)
30 Then the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. 31 Behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall name him Jesus. 32 He will be great and will be called Son of the Most High, and the Lord God will give him the throne of David his father, 33 and he will rule over the house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom there will be no end.” 34 But Mary said to the angel, “How can this be, since I have no relations with a man?” 35 And the angel said to her in reply, “The holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. Therefore the child to be born will be called holy, the Son of God. 36 And behold, Elizabeth, your relative, has also conceived a son in her old age, and this is the sixth month for her who was called barren; 37 for nothing will be impossible for God.”
Nothing in the Bible says Mary was a perpetual virgin.
From Wikipedia: “The New Testament names James the Just, Joses, Simon, and Jude as the brothers (Greek adelphoi) of Jesus (Mark 6:3, Matthew 13:55, John 7:3, Acts 1:13, 1 Corinthians 9:5). The same verses also mention unnamed sisters of Jesus.”

Pray you heed Paul’s warning to Timothy, as well as the warnings from Jesus in Matthew 24, Mark 13, and Luke 21.

  2. Mary’s role today, as it was 2000 years ago, is to bring Jesus into the world – The first time physically, now spiritually. Her seed, we Catholics, are dueling with the seed of the serpent, the unbelievers who hate Jesus. Her soul, still very much alive, is still magnifying the Lord…

    1. “Her seed, we Catholics”?
Where do you get these pronouncements?
Isn’t Jesus her offspring, as well as his brothers and sisters mentioned in the Bible?
The first followers of Jesus were Jews, who recognized Him as the Messiah.
Nothing in the Bible that suggests we are lead to Jesus by Mary.

    2. Women don’t have seeds, they have eggs. Therefore it has to be one very special woman, one of a virgin birth. Catholic are Mary’s offspring, proudly. Protestants deny her spiritual motherhood, which Jesus gave us from the cross…

    1. The footnotes in my Catholic Bible for Revelation 12 actually states that the woman symbolizes God’s people in the Old and the New Testament.
Nothing in the footnotes for Psalm 45 suggests a coronation of Mary.
Luke 1 in my Catholic Bible says, “Rejoice, O highly favored daughter! The Lord is with you. Blessed are you among women.” Later in Mary’s Canticle, she states “For he has looked upon his servant in her lowliness; all ages to come shall call me blessed.” Hardly a command from God to call her blessed.

    2. Jesus didn’t address His words to John. He addressed them to the DISCIPLE whom he loved. You and I are also disciples whom Jesus loves, so just as Eve became the physical mother of the living at the foot of the tree of knowledge of good and evil, Mary now becomes the spiritual mother of the living at the foot of the tree of life known as the cross..

  4. The bible plainly says that you will know a tree by its fruit. A bad tree cannot bear good fruit. Elizabeth says that Mary is the most blessed among all women, and that Jesus is the fruit of her womb. Therefore, if Jesus is pure and holy, and he is, then Mary has to be also. Otherwise, a bad tree did bear good fruit.

  5. Reading 2, First Corinthians 15:20-26, 28
20 In fact, however, Christ has been raised from the dead, as the first-fruits of all who have fallen asleep.
21 As it was by one man that death came, so through one man has come the resurrection of the dead.
    22 Just as all die in Adam, so in Christ all will be brought to life;
23 but all of them in their proper order: Christ the first-fruits, and next, at his coming, those who belong to him.
24 After that will come the end, when he will hand over the kingdom to God the Father, having abolished every principality, every ruling force and power.
25 For he is to be king until he has made his enemies his footstool,
26 and the last of the enemies to be done away with is death, for he has put all things under his feet.
28 When everything has been subjected to him, then the Son himself will be subjected to the One who has subjected everything to him, so that God may be all in all.

Doesn’t yesterday’s reading at mass state that those who have fallen asleep remain in the grave until Jesus returns?

    1. Why do you say that? Where is the biblical basis for it?
No mention of anything such thing in the OT or the NT.
Why would you suggest that Protestants hate Mary?
As a Catholic, I question some of the dogmas of the church when compared to the Bible, including the Assumption of Mary and the Immaculate Conception. How does that equate to hating Mary?

  6. It’s always amazing to me how so many protestants hate the Mother of God, as if that is pleasing to Jesus. That somehow hating His mother (and ours, John 19:27) elevates Jesus and makes Him happy. Try this with your earthly mother – Go to your Father and tell him that you love him infinitely, but that his wife, your mother, is really nothing, and had nothing to do with how you turned out.
Mary is the new Eve, the new Ark of the Covenant, the Queen Mother, the first Christian, the first evangelist, the Woman foretold in Genesis 3:15 who will crush the serpent’s head, the Queen in Psalm 45 being coronated, and The Woman in Revelation 12 at war with the devil.

And we are commanded by God Himself to call her blessed. Instead, protestants denigrate her and call her a “vessel” instead of the Mother of God. Good luck on your judgment day; you will need it.

    1. Thank you brother Ray. I read your reply I thought I wrote that. so wonderful to hear the conviction, see the humility and gratefulness for the wonderful gift we have been given, Our Mother. As the bridge between heaven and earth than, as the same bridge between earth and heaven now! Another thought for those others who reject a most wonderful created instrument of His creation to assist us. Full of Grace God is with you. If they like to stay in solo scripturo, Full to me equals 100%. Why would He design anything less than 100% pure to come into the world to save us? I am very thankful for her “yes” and total obedience and example. And a deeper thought. As His body grew within He fed off her and even after birth. She fed the infancy of God for possibly many years. You cannot say Mary fed the infancy of absolute purity of God with impure nourishment of her milk! She was created pure and free from stain.
She was saved by the redemption of His sacrificial act of love just as we were. The only difference is hers came before her creation, ours came after our creation. Only we live in physical time. God is infinite and now!
      Much much more.
I am forever thankful for God sending her in my life to bring me, a once lost sheep, home to her Son Christ!!
We Can’t love her more than He does!!

Besides showing anything less than love for her wouldn’t that be against one of His biggest commandments, To love thy neighbor

but thats what happens when you lose 1500 years of church history and the world is run by 7.8 billion opinions

      Good job my friend.

  8. Christopher,
Rather than prolong this exchange, I will depart in peace.
The path is wide, but the gate to the kingdom of God is narrow.
Time will tell for all of us.

  9. Christopher,
I’ll share the only Gospel that records it,

    Luke 1:46-55
    New American Bible (Revised Edition)
The Canticle of Mary. 46 And Mary said:

    “My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord;
47 my spirit rejoices in God my savior.
    48 For he has looked upon his handmaid’s lowliness;
behold, from now on will all ages call me blessed.
    53 The hungry he has filled with good things;
the rich he has sent away empty.
54 He has helped Israel his servant,
    remembering his mercy,
55 according to his promise to our fathers,
to Abraham and to his descendants forever.”

How does this proclaim the Immaculate Conception, or the Assumption?

  10. Christopher,

Rather than my own words, I’ll share those from Our Lord and Savior:

    Luke 11:27-28
    New American Bible (Revised Edition)
27 While he was speaking, a woman from the crowd called out and said to him, “Blessed is the womb that carried you and the breasts at which you nursed.” 28 He replied, “Rather, blessed are those who hear the word of God and observe it.”

  11. Your article and our exchanges bring to my mind Paul’s words to Timothy.

    2 Timothy 4
    New American Bible (Revised Edition)
    Chapter 4
Solemn Charge. 1 I charge you in the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who will judge the living and the dead, and by his appearing and his kingly power: 2 proclaim the word; be persistent whether it is convenient or inconvenient; convince, reprimand, encourage through all patience and teaching. 3 For the time will come when people will not tolerate sound doctrine but, following their own desires and insatiable curiosity, will accumulate teachers 4 and will stop listening to the truth and will be diverted to myths.

    1. “Surely, from now on all generations will call me blessed”.
Proclaim it from the rooftops, Robert. Let’s hear it.

  12. Mary struck, strikes, and continues to strike at satan’s head, yet satan barely musters a wiggle beneath her foot. His painful cries are music to my ears.

    1. Thus all Israel brought up the ark of the covenant of the Lord with joyful shouting, to the sound of horns, trumpets, and cymbals, and the music of harps and lyres.

  13. Ray,
And yet Jesus said in John 3 that no has gone to heaven, and in John 14 he tells the disciples that he will come back for them. Did Jesus return yet?
The Gospel of John was written around 90AD, long after Mary’s death.
Yet, John doesn’t mention Mary’s death, or assumption, nor do any of the other NT writers. Don’t you find that peculiar for such an extraordinary event, which was only alleged after several centuries with no known eyewitnesses? Unlike the Biblical testimony regarding the resurrection and ascension of Our Lord and Savior.
Isn’t the “woman”, in Revelation 12, Israel? Numerous translations of the Bible have a heading for the beginning of the chapter, referencing the woman as Israel.
If the woman is Mary, where is an indication that she is in heaven? Verse 6 says that she fled into the desert and was protected for 1,260 days. Then, in verse, 12, Satan is cast down to the earth and pursues the woman.
No scriptures exist regarding the assumption, yet in 1950, the Pope said it was so. Let’s keep in mind that Jesus did not pronounce the papal infallibility. And Peter was confronted about his incorrect thinking in the early church.

    1. Robert, is your name written in the scriptures? I am sure I will not be able to find it. Just because something is not in scripture does not mean it is not true or does not exist. I pray the Mary will give you the grace to increase your faith.

    2. Robert, is your name written in the scriptures? I am sure I will not be able to find it. Just because something is not in scripture does not mean it is not true or does not exist. I pray that God will give you the grace to increase your faith.

    3. In the Old Testament, Israel is called a harlot over and over and over again. The sins of the entire human race from Adam to 70 AD were brought down on Israel, according to Jesus. So no, the WOMAN in heaven is not a country. It is a WOMAN, THE WOMAN from Genesis 3:15, who went to the desert (Egypt) to be protected from Satan. Revelation 12:17 says that we are the children of THE WOMAN if we bear testimony to Jesus and keep the Commandments, which agrees totally with John 19:27, when Jesus gave his mother to us. I AM NOT the child of the nation state of Israel and Benjamin Netanyahu.

  14. Jesus own family tried to stop Him from preaching because they though He had lost His mind!
    Mark 3:21 New International Version
21 When his family heard about this, they went to take charge of him, for they said, “He is out of his mind.”
31 Then Jesus’ mother and brothers arrived. Standing outside, they sent someone in to call him.

Mary also needs to be saved!
    Luke 1:47New International Version
47 and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior,

    1. Hebrews 4:15
For we do not have a high priest who is unable to empathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are—yet he did not sin.

If Mary was as you say without sin, then Jesus would not have had a body prone to sin and would not know the temptations we experience. Mary and her family coming to restrain Jesus is not a holy act and Mary’s sins was paid on the cross when Jesus died for us all and not before.

    1. God’s people do not give birth to a savior, Mary does. God’s people do not have a crown on their head (s?). But the Queen Mother does. Mary can certainly represent God’s people, but Mary is in heaven, body and soul, and is the Queen Mother.

  15. For example, the pope’s recent comments about same sex unions.
Or, nothing in scriptures about the Assumption of Mary, despite the fact that all New Testament books were likely written after her death.

    1. Or when Jesus says in John 3 that no one has gone to heaven.
Or in John 14 when Jesus tells his closest followers that He will come back for them.

  16. Carmen Gomez Quintana

Thank you, thank you, thank you for this beautiful tribute to Mary. I’m not only going to print your awesome article but I’m going to take the time to look up each of these saints and read more on their devotion to Our Lady. God bless you for these words!
