Surviving Depression

Depression and anxiety are very serious issues. If you have or have ever been one who has suffered through these times of darkness, you know what I mean. Other than a few limited cases of anxiety, particularly around the time, I transitioned to working for myself, I have not had a lot of experience with either. However, thanks to a recent book I read, I have a complete understanding of what others experience. Surviving Depression: A Catholic Approach by Sister Kathryn J. Hermes was recently released in its third edition. If you are looking for a companion for your journey to a better day, Sister Kathryn is a phenomenal choice.

In the twenty years since this book was first released, much has changed in how mental health is approached. With advancements in medicine and a greater understanding in what triggers depression and anxiety, we are light years ahead of where we were. In the ten chapters and the conclusion of this book Sister Kathryn lays out a roadmap to recovery. She includes a lot of great information not only for those suffering from depression but those of us who can serve as their support network.

For me, this was an invaluable part of this book. Sister Kathryn is a depression sufferer herself who has overcome and persevered. Surviving Depression has helped thousands over the course of two decades, and it was very insightful to read her advice. In this third edition, she has expanded the book to include anxiety as well. She opens the book looking at what depression is and what causes it. There are numerous reasons people suffer from depression and anxiety, and the cures for it are just as varied.

Sister lays out the fundamentals of the three-pronged strategy for success. These are dietary, spiritual, and medical. First and foremost if you find yourself in a deep rut, just not yourself, and seem to have no way out, seek medical advice. Mental health is not something to take lightly. Sister outlines a number of dietary “tweaks” one can make that can potentially lead to some dramatic relief. In saying this, if you are in love with ice cream or coffee……don’t add to your suffering by removing caffeine and sweets. Find other things to adjust. There is no sense in making the situation worse!

The third area to turn to is the spiritual realm. Add prayer. It may seem difficult, and you may not feel like doing it, but just do it. You probably feel abandoned and wondering why God had allowed this in your life. That’s normal. I can tell you that God has not but within an hour of reading this, you will likely have that doubt return. Rest assured, walking through this darkness, and leaning on God, calling for His help, will ultimately lead you to the light.

If you suffer from depression or anxiety, Surviving Depression is a wonderful resource. If you are fortunate enough to not be struggling with either but have a friend or loved who is, this book is for you as well. Be a source of hope for them. Understand what they are dealing with. Sister Kathryn can help you and them. Twenty years later, this book is just as special as it was when copy one came off the press.
