Not Only Abortion: Why Catholics Shouldn’t Be Democrats

Democrats, Joe Biden, Voting, secularism, secularists

The first of the seven themes of Catholic social teaching is the life and dignity of the human person. Some people will say, “The Democrats are pro-choice candidates on abortion, but on almost every other (Catholic) social justice issue they are pro-life. I will go with the Party that best respects Catholic social teaching in its entirety.”

I couldn’t disagree more with that statement. In a previous post in Catholic Stand, “The Democrat Party and the Sanctity of Life”, I stated my opinion that the Democratic Party does not best respect Catholic social teaching in its entirety. These people are saying that in addition to abortion, we give this Party a pass on euthanasia, embryonic stem cell research, and late-term abortion procedures, including infanticide. It’s not okay for Democrats or anybody to support Planned Parenthood, founded by eugenicist Margaret Sanger, whose Negro Project for limiting the black community was to provide abortions. This party has earned itself the label “the party of death.”  I cannot support that ideology. I don’t believe Catholic social teaching supports it as “the lesser of two evils.”

Apart from the “party of death” label, here are several other reasons why I think it not a good idea for a Catholic to be a Democrat.

Same-Sex Marriage and Transgender Ideology

I genuinely do not think that Catholic social teaching relative to the call to family, community, and participation has these kinds of things in mind.

Please show me the Catholic social teaching that is a proponent of same-sex marriage or transgender ideology.  I know what the Catechism of the Catholic Church says relative to same-sex tendencies, and I agree: “Every sign of unjust discrimination in their regard should be avoided” (CCC 2358).  However, Catholic social teaching does not teach what the Democratic Party supports and legislates, e.g., Obergefell v. Hodges (2015), which constitutionalized same-sex marriage, and the Equality Act (2019), which aimed to suppress religious convictions on sexuality, marriage, human nature, and human dignity.

I don’t think it’s right that the government could put a faith-based adoption agency out of business that only wants to place children in traditional married mother and father families. Or a baker should have his license revoked by a state government because he doesn’t want to bake a wedding cake for a same-sex couple. I don’t think it’s right that the Equality Act would allow biological males to identify themselves as females to compete in female high school and collegiate athletics. I don’t believe incarcerated biological males with a history of violence against women and who identify themselves as females be allowed to house with women. The thought of one of my granddaughters or little great-granddaughters seeing a man in the lady’s room is beyond my tolerance. Allowing transvestites in all their regalia to teach little kids is appalling to me.

Elimination of Religion from Society

Have you ever heard President Trump or a Republican say they want to remove “In God We Trust” from our currency?   Have you ever listened to any Republican champion the removal of God from the pledge? House Democrats have eliminated “So Help Me God” from swearing-in oaths. How about religious freedom: Have Republicans ever legislated any bill that would force Catholic religious organizations to perform procedures (abortion or contraceptive) against their religious doctrines?  Democrats did under the guise of Obamacare.

Can Socialism Overwhelm Christianity?

I am not a socialist, communist, Marxist, or any other “-ist” that opposes free enterprise.  Those social engineering ideas do not work except for the people who are in control. Young people like to pump up their arms and shout, “Go, Bernie.” I doubt you would see President Trump or many Republicans pumping fists for Socialism. Venezuela is the most recent example of failed socialist thinking. “Socialism is precisely the religion that must overwhelm Christianity. … In the new order, Socialism will triumph by first capturing the culture via infiltration of schools, universities, churches and the media by transforming the consciousness of society.” (Antonio Gramsci).  Do Gramsci’s words sound familiar?

Global World Order?  No, Thank You

I am not for a globalist world order; I am for my country. I do not want someone from liberal France, indifferent Germany, atheistic China, or atheistic Russia trying to impact my family or me with their view of what the world should be like according to their way of God-less thinking. Although some modern-day authors refute the idea that America was founded on Judeo-Christian values, I feel that America’s relationship with God has played a significant role in our moral fiber. Global world order?  No, thank you.

Taking a Knee

I do not burn the American flag or kneel when our national anthem plays; I stand. I do not support the leftists who call me names because I disapprove of their burning and kneeling actions. Too many men and women have died for America and her flag for me to dishonor them.  There are many ways to protest injustice, disrespecting my country and her patriots are not one of them.

Martin Luther King, Jr. and his followers took a knee and prayed for equality. I agree with taking a knee and praying, not protesting. And by the way, I only kneel to worship my Father in Heaven, my Lord Jesus Christ, and the Holy Spirit.

Defunding Police or Military: Sheer Lunacy

I would never advocate for the defunding of our police force; I support our police. The sheer lunacy of the Democratic mayors and governors suggesting or being mob and media coerced into stating defunding police as an answer to the problem of racism is astounding. They do not know the history. They do not see the chaos that gang rule brings. They may want to read Thomas Hobbes’ Leviathan or look closely at what happened during the mob rule in the French Revolution. Better still, look at what is happening now in our country. I get a laugh at Charles Barkley’s comment about defunding police” “Who are black people supposed to call? Ghostbusters?”

I am not for reducing our military. I support our military. I like carrying a giant stick to ward off anybody foolish enough to attack us. Superpower status is what keeps us safe. Liberals have not figured it out or refuse to believe it: National safety comes from military strength.

Israel: A Middle East Keystone

I am for Israel and the Jewish people; I am for defending Israel and the Jewish people.  The Democrats under Obama and Biden tried to undermine Israel and the Jewish people.  I’m not geo-political, but to me, Israel is the keystone in the middle East.

One other thing: the Jews are not responsible for the crucifixion of Jesus. Vatican II laid that idea to rest. Just like present-day Germans are not responsible for the Holocaust, present-day Americans are not responsible for slavery, and present-day Japanese people are not responsible for Pearl Harbor. Blaming the current generations for the deeds of their ancestors is foolish. The idea for reparations is a cause for divisiveness in this country.

Religious Repression

I hate religious repression of any kind; I support freedom of religion. I do not want to change the Constitution to serve fleeting secular needs. I like the stability and guarantees that our laws provide, primarily freedom of religion and freedom to assemble at a place where I worship.  I found it a bitter pill to watch Democratic politicians restrict places of worship. At the same time, they promoted and attended funerals and protests in support of tragic racial events.  Fortunately, many, including blacks, saw through the hypocrisy.

Immigration, Borders, and Voting

I do not want our borders to be wide open; I insist that our borders be protected.  I do not support illegal immigration; I wholeheartedly support legal immigration.   I do not support the Catholic Campaign for Human Development activities that seek to undermine and participate in the illicit immigration caravans.  I don’t particularly appreciate that the Vatican donated large sums of money to assist illegal immigrant caravans.  I think that it is wrong that Catholic organizations and clergy are involved in activities that undermine America’s welfare as it pertains to illegal immigration.

Illegal aliens should not vote in our country; that is foolish. Legal American immigrants should vote in our country, and they should have a verified ID card as all American voters should possess. Here is a little math for you to ponder: The Democrats want to eliminate the electoral college and substitute a national popular vote. A national popular vote would centralize political power in New York and California. The Democrats want to allow illegal aliens to vote. There are an estimated 22 million illegal aliens. Do you believe the Democratic intention to enable illegal aliens to vote has anything to do with Catholic social teaching? I don’t. It has to do with control, pure and simple.

Hypocrisy of Lockdowns

I am not for mob rule, as we have recently witnessed.  Democratic mayors and governors locked down their states over covid-19 concerns. Initially, when we had little or no data on this pandemic, we all accepted the lockdown. As time expired and data came in that eased initial fears, it is still primarily Democratic-controlled states than maintain the lockdown while allowing destructive and dangerous protests to exist in their states. That is sheer hypocrisy in the face of mob rule; I am for the rule of law. The mayors and governors should have called in the US military, but they did not. As one Democratic politician put it, “We didn’t want to give Trump a win.”

Gun Control

I own guns, like guns, am a card-carrying NRA member, and shoot sporting clays competitively. Democrats think that fewer guns in the hands of Americans would make America a safer place. Statistics disprove that thinking. Looking at most large cities governed by Democrats, e.g., Chicago, L.A., and Baltimore will show quite the opposite. The higher the gun control, the higher the gun violence rate. The recent riots showed that the businesses that weren’t destroyed or looted were those where armed owners stood in front of their shops. So much for added gun-control legislation or banning guns outright. Gun control has been a Democrat political goal for years.

Black Lives Matter

Any white man who thinks that the black man has not been living with prejudice is delusional; blacks have lived with prejudice all their lives. It needs to change. I am for the noble Black Lives Matter ideology of equal justice.

However, I think the movement has been taken over by Antifa and BLM extremists and is nothing more than an opportunity for its leaders to get rich in the millions of donated big business dollars. I am anxious to see how much of that money will get to those black mom and pop-owned stores and shops that were destroyed by so-called BLM supporters, but in reality, were nothing more than thugs, rioters, and anarchists? My guess is little, or no money will get to the people who suffered a loss.

The donated millions will result in some BLM leaders becoming a wealthy elite class of black people while mom and pop stores belly up for lack of funds. If BLM were concerned about black lives, they would surround in protest at every Planned Parenthood and other abortion clinics.  They would look to shut them all down because, since Roe v. Wade, twenty to thirty percent of abortions in the USA kill black babies. Since Roe v. Wade, 63 million babies have been killed.

Conclusion

There are many other reasons why I think the current Democrat Party is not the party I grew up with and is currently not one I could support. Liberal news media outlets have shanghaied the existing party, journalists, elite college faculty, Hollywood, and other deep state operatives including, sadly, faith-based institutions. Yes, I believe that Archbishop Vigano’s letter to President Trump was an excellent letter warning our President that Solve et Coagula’s infiltration of the underground in our social order and our church exists. I do not believe that the current Democrat Party gets a pass on their culture of death ideology because they best respect Catholic social teaching in its entirety.

I do not know how Catholics can be Democrats, and it is not only abortion.

  1. This is incorrect: separation of church and state. Nowhere should Catholics or other denominations be told which political party to be party of or to shun. This is why I turned away from the church. I do follow the leadership of the Pope and find spirituality that is nourishing to the soul vs. stifling and at the whim of the Priest de Jour.

  2. It’s hard to know which gross exaggeration or falsehood to address first but, suffice it to say, the author has taken the most extreme positions of anyone he considers to be “on the left” and applied it to every member of the Democratic party. The easiest to refute and most extreme accusations are as follows: NO Catholic doctor is being forced to perform abortions, countries with strong gun control laws have rates of violent crime ONE TENTH the rate of the US (look at the statistics of violent crimes in western Europe and the UK) and organizations that take taxpayer dollars should be compelled to serve ALL taxpayers, not just those they like and agree with (if they want to fund their own organizations without government support, that’s another story and no one has closed a self-funded religious charity). I won’t get into the importance of personal morality but anyone calling themselves Catholic should think twice about voting for a thrice married, twice divorced serial adulterer who says he has never asked God’s forgiveness and has nothing to ask forgiveness for (including paying off porn stars to keep them from revealing his extra marital affairs).

    1. John- Allow me to “get into the importance of personal morality.” For the sake of discussion, let us accept 100% of what you say as true. It does not follow then that a catholic with a well-formed conscience as defined by Holy Mother Church can vote for perhaps soon-to-be Pres Harris, her running mate, or other democrats without committing a mortal sin, which, if not confessed with repentance, will mean that that voter spends eternity in the fires of hell, the hell about which Our Savior warned us. 2. Every saint has a past, and every sinner has a future.
John, you call into question President Trump’s past sins, but how about Joe Biden’s past sins, how about Kamala Harris’s past sins… how about their current sins? How about Hunter Biden’s labtop hard drive, now in the hands of Rudy G., the New York Post and Fox News?????

    3. Well said… I can’t agree more. To follow the values of the person he calls “President”, who is devoid of a moral compass, is the greatest mistake one could make, and demeans and diminishes the values that this country was founded upon.

  4. You would do good to try to understand people who disagree with you instead of seeing them as culture war stereotypes.

Your viewpoints sometimes don’t align with Catholic teaching but they align exactly with the Republican Party of Donald Trump. Your true loyalty is obvious.

    1. My primary and overriding loyalty is to the over 62,000,000 innocent victims (over half minority babies) of the democrat Party of Death’s RETA policies – racial eugenic targeted abortion. All other loyalties, if any, are a distant second. The recent – finally – public proclamations by numerous clergy re: the grave sinfulness of voting for democrats is aligned exactly with catholic teaching. Guy, Texas

    2. Roe v. Wade is not going to be overturned. Some red states might try to outlaw abortion but the laws will be struck down. Most Americans are in favor of legal abortion. That’s long been true and is not changing.

How best to direct your energies? Perhaps working to save at least some of those unborn. How to reduce the demand? Maybe repair the social safety net? Fund prenatal and postnatal care? Paid family leave? Open adoption? Many possibilities exist consistent with (and even endorsed by) Catholic teaching.

    3. What stereotypes? Dems have unapologetically supported everything mentioned. Read their national platform. Not only do they enthusiastically back legal abortion, they demand that taxpayers pay for it, and that employers provide for it, regardless of any scruples of conscience.

They enthusiastically back gay/lesbian “marriage” and the Gender Identity movement, both of which represent a denial of truth and reality regarding both marriage and human nature itself.

Blue state governors stood idly by while city after city, almost all Dem. run, were overwhelmed by riotous violence. They have not denounced either Antifa or BLM.

They in practical effect, support illegal immigration and making it ever easier for non-citizens to vote.
They oppose conscience protection for anyone, including religious institutions, who might oppose their radical policies.

There’s nothing new about it. Again, read their platform. Facts. Not stereotypes.

If you can find anything in Catholic teaching that supports the killing of the unborn along with public funding, gay/lesbian “marriage”, or gender identify whereby one can define one’s gender at will, please provide some documentation. Further if you can support any recent teaching calling into question that Church’s condemnation of Marxism in all its manifestations, please provide documentation as well. And make no mistake- The Dems are fully under the control of radical leftists who now effectively control most of our cultural institutions.

    4. This election reminds me of Stanley Milgram’s 1960s experiments. The social psychologist tested how far people would go when ordered by an authority figure to electrocute another person. However in this case, the question is how far will people go to follow partisan politics – will a so-called Christian actually vote for a ticket that supports abortion, euthanasia, cloning, sex change operations forced upon Catholic hospitals, contraceptive coverage forced upon nuns, and other abominations?

CaptCrisis, you remind me of the subjects who administered the final 450-volt shock.

“For where your treasure is, there also will your heart be.”

  5. Dear Dennis, You are echoing , by my count, now 14 priests, pastors, and bishops across America who are saying publicly that it is a grievous sin for a catholic with a well formed conscience to vote for soon-to-be Pres Harris, her running mate, and other democrats. These clergy are true shepherds; not the hirelings or wolves in vestments who try to convince the faithful they can vote for a democrat in good conscience. More and more of the wolves are now being -legally via public records – outed as registered democrats. To paraphrase one catholic cardinal, the Democrat Party has become the Party Of Death. Hate and utter vomit-him-out-of-one’s-mouth contempt for President Trump is not sufficient justification to vote for any of the death dealers. Guy, Texas

  7. Well argued, Dennis. You have backed up all your points with sound logic and respect for the truth. I hope enough Americans agree with you as the upcoming election could well be the most important in the history of the U.S.

The modern Democratic Party is anti-Christian, anti-democracy and is led by people who, It seems to me, believe that the ends justify the means. Anything that weakens Trump’s chances of winning the election is, in their view, completely justified. The Russia hoax being just one example of their perfidy. .
