Sometimes even good relationships with others can leave us feeling unsatisfied in our lives. However, the most important relationship, a relationship with God Himself, will always leave us feeling content. When we find God, we find ourselves. We find our true calling in life. Want to know something that we should be grateful for? When we put God first, even our relationships with others will drastically begin to change. When we begin to love others how Jesus loves, we become better people. We are on the path to sainthood.
For example, we can so easily get carried away with our feelings in a personal relationship, especially when we are young. However, when we make God our center, our perspective shifts. We begin to care about this person in a Christlike way. What is important is no longer about looks but about the person’s soul and final destination of Heaven.
Indeed, God is the one with whom we should be spending most of our time, day in and day out. He is the one to whom we should give ourselves entirely. However, if we are seeking another, we must first seek God. Then and only then, will the perfect human relationship come our way. St Anthony of Padua states this wisdom beautifully in the “Be Satisfied with Me” prayer below.
Everyone longs to give themselves completely to someone,
To have a deep soul relationship with another,
To be loved thoroughly and exclusively.
But to a Christian, God says, “No, not until you are satisfied,
Fulfilled and content with being loved by Me alone,
With giving yourself totally and unreservedly to Me.
With having an intensely personal and unique relationship with Me alone.
Discovering that only in Me is your satisfaction to be found,
Will you be capable of the perfect human relationship,
That I have planned for you.
You will never be united to another
Until you are united with Me.
Exclusive of anyone or anything else.
Exclusive of any other desires or longings.
I want you to stop planning, to stop wishing, and allow Me to give you
The most thrilling plan existing… one you cannot imagine.
I want you to have the best. Please allow Me to bring it to you.
You just keep watching Me, expecting the greatest things.
Keep experiencing the satisfaction that I am.
Keep listening and learning the things that I tell you.
Just wait, that’s all. Don’t be anxious, don’t worry
Don’t look around at things others have gotten
Or that I have given them
Don’t look around at the things you think you want,
Just keep looking off and away up to Me,
Or you’ll miss what I want to show you.
And then, when you’re ready, I’ll surprise you with a love
Far more wonderful than you could dream of.
You see, until you are ready, and until the one I have for you is ready,
I am working even at this moment
To have both of you ready at the same time.
Until you are both satisfied exclusively with Me
And the life I prepared for you,
You won’t be able to experience the love that exemplified your relationship with Me.
And this is perfect love.
And dear one, I want you to have this most wonderful love,
I want you to see in the flesh a picture of your relationship with Me.
And to enjoy materially and concretely the everlasting union of beauty, perfection and love that I offer you with Myself.
Know that I love you utterly.
I AM God. Believe it and be satisfied.”
Being satisfied with God does not only apply to romantic relationships. This satisfaction can apply to friendships, those longing for a child, or a new job opportunity as well. We should praise God because He is always faithful in keeping all His promises. If you are sure that He placed a certain desire in your heart for something good, trust in Him that He will answer your prayer intention in His perfect timing and way.
So, regardless of the situation in which you find yourself, even after years of longing and trials, always remember that God has a plan for you. Try to take Psalm 62 to heart. You should trust in Him that He will indeed answer your prayer faithfully, and praise Him throughout the journey.
“My soul rests in God alone,
from whom comes my salvation.
God alone is my rock and salvation,
my fortress; I shall never fall.
How long will you set yourself against a man?
You shall all be destroyed,
Like a sagging wall
or a tumbled down fence!
Even highly placed people
plot to overthrow him.
They delight in lies;
they bless with their mouths,
but inwardly they curse.
SelahMy soul, be at rest in God alone,
from whom comes my hope.
God alone is my rock and my salvation,
my fortress; I shall not fall.
My deliverance and honor are with God,
my strong rock;
my refuge is with God.
Trust God at all times, my people!
Pour out your hearts to God our refuge!
SelahMortals are a mere breath,
the sons of man but an illusion;
On a balance they rise;[c]
together they weigh nothing.
Do not trust in extortion;
in plunder put no empty hope.
On wealth that increases,
do not set your heart.
12 [d]One thing God has said;
two things I have heard:
Strength belongs to God;so too, my Lord, does mercy,
For you repay each man
according to his deeds.”
