Catechism of the Seven Sacraments

Created with GIMP

The great thing about books is they can be revisited. There is something about walking over to a bookshelf and pulling down a book you have not opened in a while. This is particularly true when it comes to books for children. Such is the case with a book our family has recently revisited with our son, who will be receiving his first communion (praise be to God). Catechism of the Seven Sacraments is a fantastic tool for teaching the Catholic faith uniquely and one the entire family will enjoy.

The book is presented in comic-book format and utilizes Lego figures to explain a wide array of topics. Using typology, the book’s creators, Kevin and Mary O’Neill, do a stellar job of connecting the Old and New Testaments to reveal salvation history in a manner that makes the Catholic faith accessible to all ages.

There are seven main parts to the book, which are then broken down further into what I will call stories as follows:

  • Eucharist contains 18 stories
  • Baptism contains 6 stories
  • Reconciliation contains 9 stories
  • Confirmations contains 9 stories
  • Marriage contains 5 stories
  • Holy Orders contains 11 stories
  • Anointing of the Sick contains 5 stories

The key part of this book again that grabbed me was the use of typology to connect the dots between the Old and New Testaments. This connection truly is something that most Catholics are unaware of. It is refreshing to see it in this book and presented in a manner that even youth can grasp. But don’t take that wrong…adults will get plenty out of this book as well.

So how deep does this book go? Well, as an example, one of the stories discusses the fourth cup. If you are familiar with Scott Hahn’s writings, you have likely read or heard Scott speak of the fourth cup often. If you have not, then you are in for a mind-blowing revelation!

I encourage you to add a copy of this hardcover, full-color book that comes in at 291 pages and add it to your library. You will often reference with your children and may find yourself taking a peek occasionally as well!

I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. Read my entire archives at www.catholicbookblogger.com
