In Michigan, voters soon will weigh in on Prop 3. If it passes, the lunacy in it likely will be coming to you, in your state. Put simply, Prop 3 not only expands abortion “rights” beyond what Roe v. Wade allowed. It goes far beyond.
Urgent Call to Action
With the caption, “Reproductive Freedom for All,” the proposal is anything but the “middle-of-the-road” approach some supporters claim it to be. It has significant, negative ramifications. As Dr. Jay Richards, MD, and Emma Waters of the DeVos Center explain it,
“Proposition 3 would enshrine abortion as an absolute right in state law. That’s bad enough, but since it’s written so vaguely—probably by design—it would do a lot more than that. If voters approve this amendment, they could unwittingly be rejecting not only the right of the unborn to life, but the rights of parents to protect and direct the upbringing of their minor children.
The first concern—the rights of parents—comes from Proposition 3’s use of the term “individual.” It means that anyone, including a minor, could have a right to abortion, birth control, or other reproductive surgeries like the removal of healthy breasts. All without the knowledge or consent of parents.“
If you have children, grandchildren, or nieces and nephews, how do you feel about that? As well, Prop 3 could pave the way to both partial-birth abortions and eugenic abortions. Not only that but presently there’s a law in Michigan that protects children born alive after botched abortions. Prop 3 could do away with that, too. This certainly doesn’t take care of the “freedom for all” where “all” includes the unborn baby, does it?
What’s in a Name
Freedom for all, indeed. Freedom of, from, or for what? In this age, individualism–“it’s all about me”–seeks liberty to do whatever one wishes. Such liberty, though, is not freedom. Freedom means we’re cooperating with God’s will and His grace, to let Him transform our souls. Real freedom comes from accepting God’s will, and letting Him fill our souls with His calm and happiness. Liberty is different. If we choose to kill another human being, born or unborn, we’re exercising liberty. But that’s not moral, and it does not provide freedom for them or for us. Nor will it fill our souls with calm and happiness. Look past the nice-sounding name of the proposal to really understand what’s at stake here.
Your State Could Be Next
And a lot is at stake. If you’re not from Michigan, you may be reading this wondering what it has to do with you. The bottom line: plenty! If this passes in Michigan, count on the pro-abort radicals to look for the next domino to fall, and the next, and… Evil becomes more emboldened by each subsequent victory. It could be simply a matter of time–and not all that much time–before you see it in your backyard. Now is the time for Christians to stand together and defeat this measure.
War Chests
If Prop 3 were to pass in November, Planned Parenthood would be a prime beneficiary of it. Governor Whitmer of Michigan, of course, is in favor of it. It would help create more “abortion tourism” for the state; money talks. And speaking of money, it should surprise no one that proposal backers have raised millions of dollars to try to assure a win. At the time of this writing, Prop 3 supporters had raised over $10 million, compared to something around half a million dollars or less for the opponents.
Have No Fear
To some, all of this may sound somewhat discouraging. But call to mind the story of David and Goliath:
“Goliath,…whose height was six cubits and a span. 5 He had a helmet of bronze on his head, and he was armed with a coat of mail, and the weight of the coat was five thousand shekels of bronze. 6 And he had greaves of bronze upon his legs, and a javelin of bronze slung between his shoulders. 7 And the shaft of his spear was like a weaver’s beam, and his spear’s head weighed six hundred shekels of iron; and his shield-bearer went before him…”
Yet, we have young David, going out to face Goliath head-on with a sling and a few stones:
And David said, ‘The Lord who delivered me from the paw of the lion and from the paw of the bear, will deliver me from the hand of this Philistine’…When the Philistine arose and came and drew near to meet David, David ran quickly toward the battle line to meet the Philistine. And David put his hand in his bag and took out a stone, and slung it, and struck the Philistine on his forehead; the stone sank into his forehead, and he fell on his face to the ground. So David prevailed over the Philistine with a sling and with a stone, and struck the Philistine, and killed him…
So far, at least based on financial support against and for, Prop 3 is a David-and-Goliath matchup.
God’s Grace, Our Faith, and Cooperation
We know how the David and Goliath skirmish ended. Because of God’s grace and His support for Israel, the faith of young David, and David’s cooperation with God, good prevailed. Consider these elements one by one. Do you believe that God supports the pro-life effort and wants to see an end to innocent blood being shed in the name of “freedom”? Do you have faith, that with God, all things are possible (cf. Mt 19:26)? And, will you cooperate with God to fulfill His will? Will you run quickly toward the battle line?
Act Now
Just what might cooperation with God look like? How about grabbing some smooth stones from the streambed to use in slaying the giant? Would you do that? Can you do it? David had the chutzpah to do it in person, man-to-man. You and I need to have confidence and the courage to provide support to the pro-life cause.
Get online and get some smooth stones for the people on the ground there to help them fight the battle in these last few weeks. In other words–go to Citizens to Support MI Women & Children. Make a secure online, sacrificial offering of whatever you can do. Prayerfully consider what the Lord’s calling you to do here. They need your help.
Pull out all the stops! Engage in prayer and fasting, together with your almsgiving. Pray the Rosary for this intention; involve your friends, family and fellow parishioners. Ask the Holy Spirit to guide the hearts of voters in Michigan this November. Pray that the Truth will be heard.
..fear not, for I am with you, be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you,
I will uphold you with my victorious right hand (Is 41:10).
