In a new study, conducted by the author of this work, a startling discovery has been unearthed. The growth in wisdom that is universally sought after is directly proportional to the loss of hair in one elderly man. Women were not included in this exercise, perhaps for obvious reasons. The law of inverse proportion, less hair equals more wisdom, applies in this limited, highly focused clinical observation.
God’s Wisdom, Hidden and Secret
In the Gospel of Matthew, we are told that “even all the hairs of your head are counted” (10:30). It is pleasing to know that God’s job, as it relates to counting hairs, has been made slightly less time consuming as we age. We are also told just before the hair reference that God knows every sparrow and when each one falls, presumably to their death. Can God keep track of everything “seen and unseen”? The short answer is yes. As scientific research sheds light on things previously unseen, whole new worlds are being discovered beyond even the smallest visible particles in our world. Atoms, once thought to be the smallest units in the universe, are now known to be comprised of electrons. Electrons are comprised of quarks, and now even smaller units called “preons”, exist at least in theory. Why all this science? Perhaps this quote from St. Paul can put things in perspective:But we speak God’s wisdom, secret and hidden, which God decreed before the ages for our glory. None of the rulers of this age understood this; for if they had, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory. But, as it is written,“What no eye has seen, nor ear heard,
nor the human heart conceived,
what God has prepared for those who love him …” (1Corinthians 2:7-9)
Divine Providence, Eternal and Limitless
“What God has prepared for those who love him,” while mostly referring to the next life, speaks to aspects involving God’s wisdom yet to be revealed within the realm of the known universe. From the macro view of outer space and the depths of the oceans to the micro view of subatomic particles that exist within a single strand of hair, nothing exists that is not intimately known to God. Divine Providence, eternal and limitless, is perpetually in motion, governing the past, present, and future of all life on Earth. The scope of God’s omniscience, omnipotence, and existence cannot be quantified. Analogy is the closest means available to us to begin to comprehend what the Saints in Heaven know:I pray that you may have the power to comprehend, with all the saints, what is the breadth and length and height and depth, and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, so that you may be filled with all the fullness of God. Now to him who by the power at work within us is able to accomplish abundantly far more than all we can ask or imagine, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus to all generations, forever and ever. Amen. (Ephesians 3:18-21)
Under God’s Watchful Eye
As we move from the age of information that began in the 20th century, to the age of experience in the 21st century and beyond, God’s divine providence will always involve more than can be realized or imagined here on Earth. The “toil” of research and discovery, while vitally important, cannot begin to match God’s provision for His children. Jesus explains:“Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they neither toil nor spin, yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not clothed like one of these. But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which is alive today and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will he not much more clothe you—you of little faith? Therefore do not worry, saying, ‘What will we eat?’ or ‘What will we drink?’ or ‘What will we wear?’ For it is the Gentiles who strive for all these things; and indeed your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things. But strive first for the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. (Matthew 6:28-33)Let us pray in thanksgiving for every strand of hair, every sparrow falling, and all of the workings in the universe that exist under God’s watchful eye.
