John Paul II’s Legacy Can Help Us Win Back Religious Liberty

The continuous setbacks and attacks on religious liberty that plague men and women of faith in the United States and across the world require responses and actions that not only are intellectually convincing, but also require the engagement of media in creative, engaging, and “culture-ready” ways.

With the canonization of John Paul the Great in the immediate future, we need to look no further then his example. “The Traveling Pontiff” had the gift of using his charismatic personality to convey the love of Christ and cause drastic political change through charitable dialogue and inspiring creative media. His approach was simple yet profound; one of charity, and at the same time one of truth.

Combating the insidious plot to strip away religious liberty from men and women of faith must take the same approach as the legacy of John Paul the Great suggests.

Daniel Rabourdin, Theology of the Table host and a former veteran producer at the Eternal Word Television Network (EWTN) for over 16 years (whose work includes the movie Saint Joan of Arc: Maid of God) is doing just that with a new production, The Hidden Rebellion: The Untold Story Behind the French Revolutionwhich tells the story of the uprising and execution of more than 150,000 Catholics in 18th century France. The underbelly of the French Revolution reveals a dark period of oppression of faith and religious freedom from a would-be populist government.

Knowing the tragic history of these lost brother and sister Catholics and getting the message out to men and women of our time is of paramount importance. This is a story that people of faith in our times should know and serves as an opportunity to (re)instill and share with our friends, co-workers and neighbors the necessity of preserving the God-given right of religious liberty. Information is power, and supporting the creation of pro-religious liberty films like The Hidden Rebellion can help educate audiences and voters in these critical times, lest the members of the Church, through an attitude of apathy, suffer the same fate of the French Vendeans in years to come.
